Notes for Hans George Frederic PFLIEGER

horizontal rule

General Note
The following is from a series of notes written by Margaret E. Pflieger summarizing her research from several sources:

"Hans Georg Frederick Pfluger was one the 107 Palatines who came to this country in the ship Samuel in 1731, landing at Philadelphia. With him came Maria, his wife [this is questionable since most researchers consider his wife to named Eve or Eva.], a son Jacob, and a daughter Maria Catrina. Crossing to the west side of the Susquehanna River, he settled in that part of the country which in 1749 became York County. Immediately upon his arrival he affiliated with the German Lutherans in this vicinity, his name appearing in the list of male members of Christ Lutheran congregation, York, in the very early days of the Stoever pastorate, 1733. In this church record we find too, the baptism of his son George Frederick, 1735, and the marriage of this daughter, Maria Catrina Pflieger to John Causeller, 1742."

"His will, dated the "teenth day of December, 1753" shows he had successfully managed his plantation, having accumulated a considerable amount of property for those days. This will, translated into English by Bartholomew Moul, who taught the first parochial school connected the Christ Lutheran congregation of York, is very interesting for the quaintness of its expression and the unique style of the translator's English orthography. We get from it, too, some idea of the character of the sturdy pioneer himself".

-----

"Hans Georg Pfluger, Aug 17, 1731. Palatines imported in ship Samuel - Hugh Piercy, Master, from Rotterdam last from [??illegible, probably Cowes]".

-----

"A list was presented of the names of thirty nine Palatines who with their Families, making in all One Hundred and Seven persons, were imported here in the Ship Samuel, Hugh Piercy, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes, as by Clearance from that Port. The Master being examined said he had no particular license for their Transportar. They were then called in, and having declared that their intentions were to settle and live peaceably in the Province the several Persons whose Names are subjoined did repeat and sign the Declaration inserted in the Minute of 21st of September 1727 and likewise took and Subscribed the Declaration of Fidelity and Abjucation. Hans Georg Fluger."

-----

"George Pfluger died in York County, Pennsylvania between December 10, 1753 and February 4, 1754. His will (which is signed by him in German script) mentioned a wife whose name is not given, a daughter, Catherin, the wife of John Kausler, and two sons, Jacob the eldest, and George Frederick, the youngest, the latter at the date of the will being under twenty-one years of age. A copy of this will is attached hereto".

The following is a typed transcription of some questions raised by Robert G. Phlegar of Salem, VA, in a letter to David R. Stephenson III dated Aug 27, 1993:

"All this brings up a number of questions I have concerning Hans Georg and wonder if the answers are in any records of other sources. I am listing these below and maybe these will give you something to ponder!

#1 - We do know that Hans Georg Pflueger arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on the Ship Samuel on August 16, 1731 and was "Qualified " on the following day. Did he know, at that time, just where he would be settling his family? If he did not, where did he live until he moved to the York area? Maybe in Philadelphia or the area nearby?

#2 - We do not know just when his son, Jacob, was born. Was his mother pregnant with him when they arrived at Philadelphia or shortly after? If Hans Georg did not go immediately to the York area, maybe Jacob was born in the Philadelphia area. Jacob could have been born as early as 1731 or before his father settled in the York area. I wonder if there are any birth records of that area for that time period?

#3 - I wonder why Hans Georg went to the York area? Did he receive a land grant there or did he purchase his "Plantation" there from the advise or suggestion of friends? If this transaction of him obtaining this land is on record this might give us the approximate time he arrived in York. Of course he may have lived there for some time before becoming a land owner.

#4 - As Hans Georg did come to York prior to the birth of his son "George Frederick," in August 1735, where did he first go to church if he was there before the Christ Lutheran Church was chartered in 1733? I feel that he, being a good christian man, would attend some church there, if one existed. It seems that I read of an earlier church called "The Church of the Codorus." If this church did exist are there any records for this church, for that time, still remaining? I wonder what denomination it was, Lutheran, Reformed, Catholic or etc.? If Jacob was born about that time maybe there is a record of this birth in their records if that church kept birth records.

#5 - The ship's list of passengers listed three females with Hans Georg. One was his wife, Eve, and one was a daughter Katrina (Catherine) who later married a John Kaussler. There seems to be no further mention of the other one, "Maria" at any time after that. She was not mentioned in Hans Georg's will. Was she a daughter of Hans Georg and Eve, or a relative who came over with them? Maybe she was met by some other member of her family or a husband to be? It could be that she died on ship on the passage over and was buried at sea. Maybe that is the reason there is no further mention of her. I wonder if these deaths and burials were recorded in the ship's log."

The following is a typed transcription of infomration from Melanie Dalton Crain, of Durham, NC with respect to the immigrants parents,in a letter to David R. Stephenson III dated Feb 16, 1996:

"Have you ever tried to find our ancestral home in Germany? When I found the 1734 marriage of Maria Barbara Pfluger to Michael Noll in Rev. Stover's records, I scurried to my database to sort records. As I suspected, our Hans Georg was the first Pfluger to come to this country (unless one is hiding - always that possibility). If Hans Georg was the first, Maria Barbara was almost certainly his daughter. There has always been a Maria missing since the name appeared on the immigration list for the ship. I immediately assumed that Maria Barbara along with Maria Katarina were daughters of Hans Georg and wife Eva. Then I wondered about the possibility of a sister who came with them. I then ran off various given Pfluger names on the IGI-Germany computer program at the LDS. Up to this point, I have looked only for Hans Georg. The closest Hans Georg by birth date is the son of Johann Georg Pfluger and Anna Katharina Huebsch, b. 11 Jan 1703. The same parents also had a daughter, Maria Barbara, b. 19 June 1706. A Johann Georg Pfluger in the same town (Wiernsheim, Neckarkreis, Wurtemberg) married an Eva Francisea Jost on 13 Sept 1729. Don't those names and dates add up nicely? I am not ready to accept this as Gospel; I still have a lot of searching and work to do."
