General Note
the following is from Margaret E. Pflieger's notes:

"Jacob, the eldest son was born in York County in 1757 and died in 1829. He is buried in the old grave yard of Christ Lutheran Church, York, PA. It is interesting to know that the spire on the steeple of this old church was made by Jacob. He was both farmer and blacksmith, owning a shop in Jefferson and one in York. The latter stood on the north east corner of George and Princess Streets as was built in the days when York was but a village. George Frederick and Jacob fought in the Revolution in Captain George Long's Company, Third Battalion, Pennsylvania. He married Barbara *** of North Carolina. There were eleven children to this marriage the name of whom, with the dates of birth and baptism, and the name of the sponsors are here given:

George Frederick - born May 26, 1783; baptized Jun 21, 1783; Parents, sponsors

Catherine - born Jun 7, 1785; baptized Jun 10, 1785; Geo. Pflieger and Catherine Shafer, sponsors

John Jacob - born Aug 15, 1788; baptized Sep 8, 1788; Jacob Sharpe and Christine Pflieger. sponsors

Elizabeth - born Jan 3, 1790; baptized Jan 30, 1790; Anthony and Maria Ritz. sponsors

John Jacob - born Apr 6, 1791; --- Valentine and Elizabeth Wilt, sponsors

Maria Margaret - born Sep 27, 1792; baptized Oct 6, 1792; Mary Magdalene Pflieger, sponsor

Maria Elizabeth - born Aug 19, 1794; baptized Oct 11, 1794; John and Catharine Pfliegerl, sponsors

Abraham - born Aug 7, 1796; baptized Sept 18, 1796; John and Phillappina Small, sponsors

Eva - born Mar 8, 1798; baptized May 6, 1798; Samuel and Eva Weiser, sponsors

Martin - born Oct 5, 1799; baptized Oct 20, 1799; Martin and Anna Maria Ebert, sponsors

Adam - born Jan 17, 1801; baptized Jan 25, 1801; John and Catharine Pflieger, sponsors

But two of these children survived the father: John Jacob (1788?? 1791??) and Catherine who married Jacob Miller."

Michael C. Gulden has done extensive research on this family. However, there are some differences between the lists:

Elizabeth's birthdate - Jan 3, 1790 vs Dec 16, 1789

John Jacob (born Apr 6, 1791) not listed by Michael Gulden

Maria Elizabeth's birth date - Aug 19, 1794 vs Aug 10, 1794

Eva's name - Eva vs Eve

Rebecca (born Nov 24, 1802) not listed by Margaret Pflieger

I have not been able to resolve these differences. Margaret did not list her source of information.

According to research in the 1940s, the family of Jacob Pflieger and Barbara is believed to have been the subject of a Stettinius painting that referred to "Johan Jacob Pfluger, wife Barbara, children Mary Catherine and Jacob". Stettinius was an itinerant artist who visited/painted in the York-Hanover area around 1798. (Complete painting was in file?? Where are two children??). Based on more recent research around 1990, there is reason to believe that another artist may have been responsible for the paintings. The following is taken from an exhibit in the York County Historical Society, July 1993:

"From about 1810 to 1830 a distinctive portrait artist lived and worked in the York-Hanover-Harrisburg area. His unsigned portraits feature one or two people (usually in profile) standing on a mound of earth. A few works show detailed backgrounds.

In the 1940s, scholars attributed them to Samuel Endredi Stettinius, a Hanover printer. However, subsequent research placed him in Washington, DC in 1800, thus eliminating him as the artist responsible for these early local portraits.

Some believe the artist to be Jacob Maental. Research confirms his presence in York County in 1811. His signed paintings (from Lebanon County) are similar in style to the Hanover works. The 1810-1830 period of the Hanover works firs Maental's chronology; he left the area in the 1830s for New Harmony, Indiana, where he died in 1863.

Did Maental live in Hanover, move to Lebanon County and then to Indiana?. Or did an unknown Hanover painter execute these portraits. We will probably never know."

Handwritten will in file; probably a transcription. Will No. Q-199. Typed transcription of will in file FTWILLS.

The following is from notes of Margaret E. Pflieger, referring to History of York and Lancaster Co., J. Dan. Rupp and Rev. D. Mumbert; Adam J. Glossbrenner assisted by W. C. Carter; Day's Annals; M. O. Smith; Jefferson Borough:

"Kraft house is still standing on the west side of Berlin Street, now owned by Jacob Rennoll. Moved store and inn to opposite side of street. Jacob Pflieger (blacksmith) built next to Kraft's hotel (1812) the second house to be built in Jefferson. Markel's house stands there now. Amos Sherer built next. Michael Miller built first brick house there (1815 [in] NW angle of square. Now occupied by G. F. Shive. Henry Rebert (tanner) did business here".

Most of the above information was researched by Margaret E. Pflieger. Information from Historical Society of York County: Will Q-199, researched by David R. Stephenson. Records of Zion Lutheran Church, York, PA researched by Michael C. Gulden.
