David Hanley Laird, Sr., 87, died Sunday, January 22, 2006, at Manor Care North. He was the husband of Pauline L. (Richcrick) Laird, who died April 23, 2000. They were married June 8, 1940. He was born August 23, 1918, in Dover Township, a son of Walter B. and Elsie M. (Smith) Laird, the first of nine children. David was owner of Laird's Hardware Store in Dover from 1961-1972. He opened Laird's Antique Shop in Dover and retired as a custodian from West York School District. David also worked several jobs with Hespenheide & Thompson Feed Co., Eastern States Feed Co., J.S. Hershey Baking Co., a painter, and a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, being discharged in 1946. He was a graduate of Dover High School in 1936, helping with several class reunions. He was a lifelong member of Rohler's Lutheran Church, serving on many committees and positions, including Church Council, Sunday School Superintendent, building committee, Sunday School picnic committee; and he started a youth choir. He has been a member of the Dover Lions Club since 1970, receiving the Melvin Jones Award in 1997. He served as song leader and greeter and helped with the Beacon Lodge School for the Blind, White Cane Days, and was the official applesauce dipper for the chicken barbeques. He served on the Dover School Board for 6 years and ran for County Commissioner in 1969. He was with the York County Fire Police and drove truck for the Weiglestown Fire Co. He was also a member of the Dover AARP, West York AARP, Dover Union Fire and Hose Co. #1, Dover Township Fire Department, Dover Ambulance Club, Shiloh VFW, and Dover Historical Society. He was an avid bowler and bowled two times a week until his confinement in December. He enjoyed camping until 2004 and spent over 20 years in Florida in the winter. David is survived by a daughter, Janet Fadely and her husband, Thomas of Dover; two sons, David H. Laird, Jr. and his wife, Shirley of York and Dean W. Laird and his wife, Deanna of East Berlin; five grandsons, Todd, Bret, Aaron, Chad, and Adam; five great-grandsons, Jordan, Benjamin, Tanner, Austin, and Kenny; a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn; two sisters, Catherine Mundis of York and Ruth Carman of New Freedom; and four brothers, Paul E. Laird of Georgia, George W. Laird of York, and Walter S. Laird and Robert L. Laird, both of Dover. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Baer; and a brother, Kenneth. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rohler's Lutheran Church, 791 Rohlers Church Road, Dover, with his pastor, the Rev. Donald Gallion, officiating. There will be a public viewing at Emig Funeral Home, 47 N. Queen St., Dover, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. There will be a Lions Club Service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Rohlers Mountain View Cemetery.
