Housing Inventory Update and Historic Plaque Designation
During the 1980’s, an inventory of the homes on Main and Canal Streets in Dover
Borough was completed by Historic York, Inc.  The inventory included the circa of
construction, the architectural style and other pertinent information about the property.
That data is approximately 25 years old and the information will be updated during 2005.
As an example of the changes during recent years, did you know the “summerhouse”
originally built at 37 S. Main Street was dismantled and rebuilt at 51 S. Main Street.
If any resident has a home with a unique interior feature which may be of historic importance and wants to
share this information; please call Gayle Heagy at 292-1976.  Otherwise, the update will be restricted to
the exterior of the property.  Several members of the Dover Historical Society will be working on this
project and will have identification to show a resident when viewing their home.
Following completion of the Housing Inventory update, we will develop criteria for use in
identifying those properties with specific historic significance.  For example, the age of the
structure; the architectural type and its importance to the settlers of  Jonerstown.  These properties
will be recognized with a historic plaque to be placed on the building, similar to the plaque on the Lecrone
House on the square in Dover Borough.  That plaque identifies the structure as listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.  The plaque will be provided and installed at no cost to the property owner,
and only after their permission is given to the historic society.
