LOST!

CAN YOU HELP US FIND OUR HISTORY?

The Society is trying to locate many of Dover’s historical items that have been misplaced, kept in a safe place, in your attic maybe, covered with dust, dirt or a tarp, or just discarded many years ago.

In this newsletter we are looking for the following items:

  • Blacksmith shop items from the shop that was located at Queen and Butter Streets in the Borough.
  • The World War II Honor Roll that was located for a time on the Drawbaugh property adjacent to the service station on the square.  It was a wooden structure that held the veterans names.
  • Any information concerning the Davidsburg Elementary School – that was located at Davidsburg and Newport Road.

BLACKSMITH SHOP UPDATE

As spring approaches we hope for cooperating weather – not like the rainy spring of 2003.  The Borough has some business to conclude before they can give the approval for work to start at Ketterman Park on Butter Road, a short distance from where the original Blacksmith Shop was dismantled.  As we go to press, the Project Contractor and Draftsman have been working on final plans to be submitted for Board approval.  With approval, the Society will be able to start the re-mantling of the Blacksmith Shop.

If you would be interested in volunteering some time and energy to the project; or maybe you would like to help the food committee with meals.  Possibly clean up or do errands is what you like to do – any and all help is needed – please call Susan Forrey at 292-6190

We are estimating this project should take, at the most, 2 ½ to 3 months – working evenings and maybe some Saturdays.

THE SOCIETY NEEDS AN ENCLOSED TRAILER OR A SECURE STORAGE SHED/BUILDING CLOSE TO THE BUILDING SITE TO STORE WOOD AND BUILDING MATERIALS WHILE WE RECONSTRUCT THE SHOP.  IF YOU CAN HELP – PLEASE CALL SUSAN FORREY AT 292-6190 OR RON BOTTERBUSCH AT 292-7894.

CONGRATULATIONS DR. CHARLES DRAWBAUGH

In case you have not noticed Dr. Drawbaugh, (Dover Historical Society Archivist) has been getting his name in the paper quite a bit lately.  Gayle Heagy submitted an article to the York Dispatch Columnist Harry McLaughlin who writes “Around Town”, about Dr. Drawbaugh.  This article appeared in the March 17, 2004 edition of the York Dispatch.

Dr. Drawbaugh of Weigelstown was honored at a banquet/social held at Wellsville Fire Hall sponsored by Charlie’s FFA Boys, eighty four of his former students and their wives, four honorary members and four of the FFA Sweethearts were in attendance.  Charlie taught at the Dover Area High School from 1953 to 1963.

Dr. Drawbaugh’s complete Biological sketch can be seen on the GDHS Website.  Dr. Drawbaugh is accepting memorabilia for the Historical Society (292-7894); he gets very distraught if he cannot report on any new donations at the monthly meetings.  Also this is an inside joke, if you were at the last meeting you will know what we are talking about.  Dr. Drawbaugh is in need of a pen; maybe someone could donate one to him.
