Greater Dover Historical Society meeting minutes for August 17, 2006

 

President Ron Botterbusch called the meeting to order at 7:40pm

 

Approval of June minutes - Madelyn Shermeyer made a motion to approve the minutes, and Cindy Snyder seconded. All members agreed

 

Treasurers report by Robert Merkert – Balance at end of May $2703.81, Income $975.46, New Balance $3679.27.  Expenses for June $623.26, New Balance $3053.01.  July income $238.09, Expenses $506.96, Balance at end of July $2787.14.  Cindy Snyder and Phyllis Wolgamuth approved the treasurers report as read, all members agreed.

 

Bob Merkert talked to the people at Capital Self Storage – the rate will remain at $23 per month.  That is a yearly contracted price.  Bob will talk to Capital and see if we can pay month to month until we get the storage building cleaned out.

 

Archivist report – Dr. Drawbaugh presented donations from Jo Ott and Ethel Rentzel Fitzkee (members).  We were given several Dover Area calendars, a fan from Crone Store, and an advertising picture from the Dover Steam Bakery.

 

Web page report by Joyce Law – Joyce sent several items to Brett to put on the Website – the 2006 Historical Walk, Marty and Melanie Green, a new picture of the Blacksmith Shop, April and May minutes, and update of progress of the Blacksmith Shop.

 

Historian – Cindy Snyder – Cindy showed newspaper articles that Norma put in the paper.  Norma asked that if anyone would see articles in the paper, to please cut them out for Cindy.

 

Adopt-A-Highway program – Lucia Hrinyar reported that the signs are now in place on Route 74.  A work day has been scheduled for October 14th.  The sign will be up by October 10th.  We will meet at Farrell’s Nursery at 8AM.  Lucia will pick up the supplies (vests, gloves, signs, etc) that the state supplies to us.  Lucia then showed us a safety film that the state requires we look at before the work day.

 

Board of Directors report – Madelyn Shermeyer

-Discussion of the type of momentos that Ted Ziegler will make for the Blacksmith Shop/dedication.

-Date for dedication set for June 2, 2007

-Discussion on the stamp that Ted will order.  Melvin Miller suggested we use 2007 instead of “07”.  The date 6/2/2007 will be used to stamp items made on the day of dedication.

-Madelyn talked to Vince Rice from Aaron Enterprises about the walkway.  He will do it at no charge to us.

-Lori Koch will help the society to get a $5000 grant through Representative Bev Mackerith’s office.  Lori will help fill out the application.

-Date set to clean out storage building will be Saturday, September 16, 2006.

-Discussion on stripping the cracks between the boards of the Blacksmith Shop.  Research will be done concerning where to obtain the wood and how it will be installed.

 

Report on Fall Fest – Madelyn Shermeyer – Food we will serve at the concession stand – hot dogs, barbecue, ham and cheese, turkey sandwiches, chicken corn soup and pretzels.  Hours of the Fest will be 11AM6PM.  Madelyn passed a sign up sheet around for people to sign to work that day.

 

Dover Fireman’s Fair – Norma Botterbusch reported that we will be at the Fair again with our display.  We will be there September 1, 2, and 4 through the 9th.  We will do the drawing for the quilt on Saturday, September 9th.  Norma asked that all the tickets be turned in.

 

Kay Stitley gave a report on the 6th Annual Historical.  We had approximately 31 in attendance.  The new people found it very informative.  Kay gave a talk at the Strayer reunion concerning the Historical Society.  Her cousin, Marlene Stiffler, talked to Kay about having members from the Dillsburg Historical Society come and go on a tour.  We talked to Kay about the possibility of the Dover Historical Society touring the Dill Tavern next year.  Cindy Snyder suggested we put a sign in the quare to let people know about our Dover tour.

 

Blacksmith Shop – Ron Botterbusch reported that Erlich treated the building for the carpenter ants on June 20, 2006 and July 17, 2006.  Ted Zielger said that we should purchase 2 fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors.  Ron Botterbusch will get price quotes for the September meeting.  Larry Law and Ted Zeilger lit the forge on Wednesday.  They reported the forge works well.

 

Joyce Law reported that Larry made 26 pictures of the Blacksmith Shop.  19 were sold for a total of $285.  Zita Smith was recognized as a super sales person.  She sold 12 lottery tickets for the fund raiser.  June Kinsey asked that everyone take 10 tickets.  They sold for $5 each.  There were 1000 tickets printed.

 

Madelyn Shermyer reported that that Blood Root books will not be ready for the fair.

 

War of 1812 Cemetery – Ron Botterhusch reported that the Borough Engineer researched the deeds and found that the cemetery belongs to the Dover United Church of Christ located on West Canal Street.  A meeting will be scheduled with the church concerning the Historical Society maintaining the cemetery.

 

Ron Botterbusch made an announcement that he and Norma would not be running for President and Secretary next year.

 

Bob Merkert and Phyllis Wolgamuth made a motion to adjourn.  Meeting Adjourned.
