G.D.H.S. Meeting minutes, October 19, 2006

 

President Ron Botterbusch called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm.

Approval of the September minutes (minutes taken and typed by Lois Slothower)

 Madelyn Shermeyer and Lori Koch approved the minutes as written, all members agreed.

 

Treasurer’s report by Robert Merkert, Balance at the end of August was $2486.56;

Income for September was $1881.75 for a total of $4368.31. Expenses for September

were $485.91 leaving a balance of $3882.40. Madelyn Shermeyer and Phyllis

Wolgamuth made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report, all members agreed.

 

Archivist report from Dr. Charles Drawbaugh, someone left a box of artifacts on his front

porch but failed to leave a name (that was Ethel Fitzee). Gayle Heagy reported that her daughter donated slate

from the roof at 33 North Main Street.

 

Kay Stitley reported that she was the guest speaker for the monthly meeting of the

Conewago Garden club. She represented the G.D.H.S. and spoke about the history of

Dover. She was given a check for $25.00 which she donated to the Society.

 

Website – Joyce Law – The September-November newsletter and the August minutes

were put on the website.

 

Ron Botterbusch appointed Kay Stitley as chairperson for the Blacksmith shop Dedication/Open house to be held June 2, 2007. She accepted the position.

 

Wine and cheese – June Kinsey reported that the committee had their first meeting

tonight at 6:00 p.m. Ron Botterbusch pointed out that Dover Borough bas an ordinance prohibiting alcoholic beverages in the park. It was suggested that June come to the next council meeting on November 6, and present this to the council.

 

Madelyn Shermeyer gave a report on the Family Fest that was held on October 1,2.006. Madelyn praised her committee that worked with her concerning the concession stand

and she thanked all who helped make this project a success. They sold approximately

12.5 gallons of chicken com soup, 25 pounds of beef barbeque and 240 hot dogs. They

sold out of food at 3 :30 p.m.

 

Lonnie and Sandy Sietz of Harmony Grove Road donated the use of their hot dog maker

for Family Fest. Larry Law and Norma Botterbusch made a motion to send a membership to Lonnie and Sandy Seitz; all members agreed.

 

Adopt-A-Highway (Lucia Hyinyak) - Ron asked Kay Stitley to give a report on this project since Lucia was not present at this meeting. There were 9 members that worked on Saturday October 14, 2006. Kay said it proved to be a very interesting day. There were

25 bags of garbage collected. Kay reported that it took them 4 hours to clean the two

miles. They worked from 8:00 a.m. unti112:00. Jeff Koch asked if non-members could work on this project, such as students from scouts or High School. Joyce law said no, if they are not members they would not lot be able to sign a Waiver releasing the Society from liability.

 

Christmas tree lighting – Lori Koch – lighting will be on Black Friday November., 24, 2006 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

 

 

Ted Ziegler and Larry Law went to a blacksmith show in Ohio. They Purchased a blower

for $30.00.

 

Nominating committee _ Kay Stitley thanked Pat Herman, Lois Slothower, Connie Miller and Lucia Hyinyak for making phone calls to the members. She read the results from the committee. See attached list of names for the various offices.

 

Blacksmith shop pictures – Joyce law reported that Larry made 35 picture frames. 27 pictures were sold for $405.00. Costs to make the pictures were $76.98.

 

Lottery fundraiser – June Kinsey reported that 279 tickets have been sold for $1395.00. 330 tickets were mailed to members, 50 tickets have been returned.

 

June Kinsey passed a sign up sheet around for volunteers to work at the storage building on October 28th. Lucia was not present, she wanted to work on the garden and lay a brick path from the walking path to the storage building.

 

November 2, 2006 – Budget meeting at Dover Borough municipal building at 6:30 p.m.

 

Melvin Miller invited the society to come to a lecture/slideshow at the West Manchester municipal building at 380 East Berlin Road, York, PA on November 20, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.  Commonwealth speaker Barry Kent will give a talk on “Indians and Europeans in PA.” Melvin passed a sign up sheet around to the members. This is sponsored by West Manchester Township Historical Society.

 

Gayle Heagy – discussion on building the shelves in the storage building, she said she was going to use 24” white pine boards. Ron Botterbusch told her it would be more economical to use 4 x 8 sheets of plywood. Lowes will cut them in half.

 

Member Jo Ott made some suggestions on ideas for fundraisers, Calendars (this has been discussed in the past) Replicas – we will be doing a replica of the Blacksmith shop when Dover Township is finished selling #3 (the jail). The Blacksmith shop will be #4 in the series. Note pads – Madelyn said that note pads are in the works as soon as Rob Stitley does the pencil drawing of the blacksmith shop.

 

Larry Law thanked Jeff Koch Harry Shermeyer and Ken Brown for putting the strips over the cracks in the blacksmith shop.
