Greater Dover Historical Society meeting minutes for June 15.2006

 

 “The President is in his chair”

 

President Ron Botterbusch called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Approval of May minutes  Madelyn Shermeyer and Lori Koch approved the minutes, all members agreed.

 

Treasurers report by Robert Merkert – Balance at the end of May $2550.70, Income 290.20, Expenses $137.09, new balance - $2703.81. Incomes to be added to next months report were $87.10 for concerts, $136.00 for quilt tickets and a $500.00 donation from Dover Borough Council.  

 

Archivist report – Dr. Drawbaugh was absent. Assistant archivist Gayle Heagy reported that the new plaque was placed in front of the jail. There were no donations.

 

Joyce Law – website report – Joyce received an e-mail from Brett Pfleiger that he will miss the next couple of meetings. The 2006 Historical walk was put on the website, Blacksmith shop update, a picture of Larry Law putting the last brick in the apron and scanned papers for deaths.

 

Board of director’s report – Madelyn Shermeyer reported on the lottery tickets as a fund raiser. We would sell tickets September, October, and November and then draw the tickets in January and February of 2007. 1000 tickets would be printed. Tickets would sel1 for $5.00 each. Winners will be based on the daily number, straight, not boxed; $25.00 each hit and $50.00 on Valentines Day. Marty Green made a motion that we sell tickets in September, October and November. Joyce Law seconded the motion, all members agreed. June Kinsey will be in charge of the Lottery fund raiser.

 

Discussion on having an Open House for the Blacksmith shop next spring – date to be announced – some suggestions were to serve refreshments and have the fifth and sixth grade band perform.

 

Stamps for the Blacksmith shop – Ted Ziegler was told to order the stamps (3/16 inch stamp with the letters G.D.H.S. for $116.00 and a stamp with DOVER, PA for $175.00) this was voted on at the February 2006 meeting.

 

Family Fun Fest – October 7, 2006- Suggestions were taken for ideas on the type of foods we will sell (hot dogs, pretzels, barbecue, ham and cheese and turkey sandwiches, and chicken corn soup). A committee was formed – Madelyn Shermeyer, Phyllis Wolgamuth, Cindy Snyder, Gayle Heagy, June Kinsey and Lucia Hrinyak.

 

Chestnut tree – we cannot get a blight-free American chestnut tree at this time. Lucia suggested that we plant what we can get now and re-plant when we can get a blight-free tree.

 

Storage Building – Larry Law will set a date for cleaning out the storage building. Bob Merkert will check with Ken Snyder at Capital Storage concerning the increase on the amount of rent we are paying ($23.00 per month to $46.00 per month)

 

 Madelyn reminded members that there is a sign up sheet for August and September concerts.

 

Blacksmith shop report by Larry Law. We are making progress; the floor, apron and electricity are in. Fixtures are not installed at present. There will also be two lights installed in the storage building. Ron Botterbusch will call Erlich about spraying for the carpenter ants. The mulberry tree has been removed.

 

Adopt-A-highway – Lucia Hrinyak reported that we now have an agreement with Penn DOT; we must wait until the signs are up before we schedule a work day.

 

Historical Walk, scheduled for June 20, 2006 – Kay Stitley – We will try to have a van for those folks who cannot walk. We will make our first visit to the Blacksmith shop.

 

Insurance – Joyce Law reported that the new insurance coverage will be $413.00. There will be $6500.00 on the storage building, $15,000.00 on the Blacksmith shop, $2500.00 on tools and one or two million on liability. Insurance will be purchased through Donna Rohrbaugh Insurance agency. Jan Eisenhart and Cindy Snyder made a motion to purchase the insurance, all members agreed. Joyce wanted to know if she should sign the paperwork and Lori Koch suggested that the president Ron Botterbusch should sign them. Robert Merkert gave Joyce a check for $413.00 to pay the premium.

 

Cemetery on Mayfield Street – Gayle Heagy reported that this property has changed hands and ownership may be turned over to the Borough or to the Historical Society. Lori Koch (council President) volunteered to get the Borough Solicitor (John Herrold) to do the research on this property and the owners.

 

Ted Ziegler and Larry Law have been given permission to go to the Blacksmith shop show in Ohio in September to purchase tools for the Blacksmith shop.

 

Cindy Snyder and Larry Law made a motion to adjourn, all members agreed.
