Greater Dover Historical Society

March 19, 2009

The regular meeting of the Greater Dover Historical Society was called to order by President Madelyn Shermeyer at 7:09 p.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church.  See the attached list showing members and guest who were in attendance.   President Shermeyer advised the membership that tonight’s meeting will have an abbreviated business agenda in order to provide adequate time for our guest speaker, Scott Mingus.

The February 2009 minutes were presented, and President Shermeyer asked for any additions or corrections to the minutes.  A motion to accept the minutes as presented was made by Terry Koller and seconded by Jeff Koch.  All voted in favor and motion passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The treasurer’s report for February 2009 was presented. There was a motion by Norma Botterbusch to approve the treasurer’s report as presented and seconded by Mel Miller.  All voted in favor and motion passed.

President Shermeyer introduced Mr. Chris Dentler from the Preservation Society of Detters Mill Dam.  Chris is the grandson of Irma and Ray Dentler.  Chris reported that in 1998-1999 the state of Pennsylvania targeted the Detters Mill Dam for removal because it was considered an orphaned dam.  Chris and his best friend, Chad Firestone, started the preservation society to try to keep the dam.  During their 8 year tenure, their organization asked for donations to send out mailers and flyers and those funds have been sitting in an account for the past couple of years.  Chris stated since this society has dissolved, it was decided to donate these funds to 2 local Dover organizations – the Dover Lions Club and the GDHS.  Chris presented a check in the amount of $427.04 to President Shermeyer.

President Shermeyer stated that Mr. Mingus brought copies of “J.E.B. Stuart Rides Through Dover, Pennsylvania”, but unfortunately due to the large turnout we did not have enough copies for everyone.  President Shermeyer instructed members and visitors to place a check mark beside their name on the sign-in sheet and Lori Koch will mail copies to anyone who requests one.  Mr. Mingus gave us permission to photocopy his publication since it is copyrighted.

Adopt-a-Highway – Melanie Green was absent due to a family emergency.  President Shermeyer reminded members the first litter pickup will be held on April 4 @ 8am.  A sign-up sheet is available on the table.    President Shermeyer also asked members to be prepared to address the remaining old business on the agenda at the April meeting.

President Shermeyer reported that the revised grant that was submitted by Lori Koch was approved and the term of the grant was extended by one year to June 2010.

President Shermeyer reported that she had asked Jo Ott to create new letterhead using updated photographs she had taken of the blacksmith shop.   There are samples on the table.

President Shermeyer introduced Mr. Scott Mingus for his presentation on the Civil War in Dover and surrounding communities.  Mr. Mingus concluded his presentation at 8:10 p.m.  Refreshments were served.

There being no further questions or suggestions from the membership, the meeting was adjourned at 8:13 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Lori Koch
